Do We Really Care for Others?
I was a first-year seminary student. Far from home, I was overwhelmed with the pressure of doing graduate work while maintaining a full-time job.
One morning between classes I sat alone on a bench on the campus. Soon someone joined me.
Lost in thought, I looked up to see one of the older professors. He said, "I saw you from my office window upstairs. I thought you looked sad and wondered if you needed someone to talk to."
He did not even know my name. I was not in his classes. But he had left his desk and his work because he cared.
Like that caring professor, Jesus continually noticed people. Whether in the synagogue, in a crowd, or along the road, Jesus saw what others missed. People whom others easily overlooked were not overlooked by Jesus.
For a brief moment I felt that Jesus was seated at the opposite end of that bench.
The professor's concern, the warmth of his eyes and his smile, his willingness to be available and to listen, all reminded me of Christ.
When he left, I realized Jesus knew what I was facing. I knew Jesus cared.
