Spilt Milk

I recently heard a story about a famous research scientist who had made several very important medical breakthroughs. He was being interviewed by a newspaper reporter who asked him why he thought he was able to be so much more creative than the average person. What set him so far apart from others?

He responded that, in his opinion, it all came from an experience with his mother that occurred when he was about two years old. He had been trying to remove a bottle of milk from the refrigerator when he lost his grip on the slippery bottle and it fell, spilling its contents all over the kitchen floor—a veritable sea of milk!

When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of yelling at him, giving him a lecture, or punishing him, she said, “Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! I have rarely seen such a huge puddle of milk. Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”

Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “You know, Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to clean it up and restore everything to its proper order. So, how would you like to do that? We could use a sponge, a towel, or a mop. Which do you prefer?” He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the spilled milk.

His mother then said, “You know, what we have here is a failed experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Let’s go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it.” The little boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!

This renowned scientist then remarked that it was at that moment that he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to make mistakes. Instead, he learned that mistakes were just opportunities for learning something new, which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment “doesn’t work,” we usually learn something valuable from it.

Wouldn’t it be great if all parents would respond the way Robert’s mother responded to him?

For Alan Jackson, however, treating the musical past as present has been a way of life, as it is with these 15 tim... [read more]

Pancakes

A young boy decided one morning to make his own breakfast. He wanted to make some pancakes.

He got a big pan and a large spoon, pulled a chair to the counter; pulled over the heavy flour canister spilling flour on the counter and floor. He scooped some flour into the bowl. By now his face, hands and pajamas were covered with flour. He added some milk and sugar then cracked a couple of eggs.

Mixing all these together, his cat started licking the mix. Pushing the cat away he knocked the egg carton to the floor. Scared and worried he started to clean his mess he slipped on the eggs. Now he is sticky and all white.

At this critical moment his father walked in, the boy started crying, "Dad I just wanted to do something good, I wanted to make some pancakes". He was sure he is going to be spanked and scolded.

But the loving father walked quietly through the mess and picked his son, hugged him, loved him and cleansed him getting his own hand and pajamas white and sticky.

This story reminds me with Jesus parable of the son that was lost.

How the son messed up his own life, took his share of his father's wealth and squandered it into loose living. Then he became in want, lived with swines and admired their food. But when he came to himself, went back to his father admitting his sins, the father forgave him and dressed him in the best robe, put a ring on his hand and made a merry feast.

So, how many times we act like young boy and take the matter in our own hand? How many times we act like that son that was lost and lived a loose life?

Is it not the time now to come back to our selves? Come back to our loving and caring father admitting our sins and mistakes and ask forgiveness? He is ready to accept us, cleanse us, dress us in shiny white robes, hugs us to his breast and protects us with his right arm.

"Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation."

"Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord; though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like pure wool."

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give rest" Said Jesus
